8th Grade Earth Science is just about finished with their Running Water and Ground Water unit. Today Mrs. Ulland brought in a model she made of a karst landscape. Karst areas tend to have large deposits of limestone underground. When water infiltrates the soil, it combines with carbon dioxide and begins to dissolve the limestone over time. In this model, the sugar cubes represent limestone. When water was poured on top of the model, the sugar dissolved leaving a cavern underneath the surface. Karst areas are unstable landscapes and are prone to sinkholes for this reason. Eventually the weight of the ground above the cavern will cause it to collapse.
