The 7th graders in Mrs. Haugland's US History class held their mock Constitutional Convention last Friday and did a wonderful job! Each student played the role of a Founding Father and debated plans for representation, the 3/5ths compromise, and whether or not to add a Bill of Rights to the Constitution. Many even dressed up for the occasion!

Our River Watch students will be competing at the annual Forum in Grand Forks on February 26, 2025. Along with a poster and verbal presentation, a big part of their project was to draft a hypothetical plan to improve recreation areas in Nelson County. They had collected survey responses from residents to help formulate the plan, and are very grateful for all of the feedback. Here is a draft of their stewardship plan! file:///C:/Users/Brandie.Ulland/Desktop/STEWARDSHIP%20PLAN%20DRAFT.pdf

7th grade Life Science was hopping again with a microscope lab! The groups rotated through four stations to view slides of different types of tissue. They had to make sketches and use clues to decide as a group if they were looking at 1) bone 2) nerve 3) lung or 4) cardiac (muscle). They did a great job with their investigative skills!

9th grade Physical Science was delighted to make some “mutant milk maggots” today in a mini-lab. Ok, no mutant insect larvae were actually produced here… We are studying mixtures, suspensions, solutions, and colloids. Milk is a colloid and you can’t see its constituent particles with the unaided eye. But when you add some acetic acid, the proteins and fats will begin to coagulate in a gross, goopy fashion…and you can really see them! This separated curd (solids) from the whey (liquid). They did not enjoy Mrs. Ulland's segue into the process of making cheese 🧀 and buttermilk, especially right before lunch hour. 😆 The class made hypotheses about how the experiment would progress if 1) temperature of the milk was increased, and 2) if the milk fat content was increased.
